Canalside Testimonial - Lang

Michael Lang
EN 201 - Writing for Graphic Publications
Final Project

The grand opening of the ice at Canalside’s Holiday Celebration will be an event like no other. We will explore the rich history of Buffalo and illustrate the impressive progress the city has made–and continues to make every day. There will be fun for all ages, so bring the whole family. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be followed by open skate, a figure skating show and finally fireworks to wrap it all up.

Anyone from Buffalo should jump on this opportunity to see the continued progress in our city and become part of the cause! We live in an exciting era–this celebration will help prove that Buffalo is on the rise! Come out and show your support of this great city. As a Buffalonian, the grand opening of the ice at Canalside will be a celebration for all to learn and express their hope and pride in this great city. I grew up in South Buffalo and my dad laced up my skates for the first time at the age of two. I am extremely excited to hit the ice on the replica canals downtown because of all the memories I have it will evoke in me. This is just one of many upcoming events intended to promote and further develop the City of Buffalo.

All proceeds will go to Buffalo’s Women & Children’s hospital, which gives you even more reason to come show your support. The Ice at Canalside will take place on December 20th, 2014 at 12 PM. For tickets, visit tickets.com, canalsidebuffalo.com or call 716-846-8200.

Favorite Song

My favorite song is Sunshine, by Atmosphere. This is my favorite song because it is relatable and extremely uplifting. It's about a man who is hungover and feels awful until he goes outside and realizes the sun is shining and the birds are chirping: "All of a sudden, I realized something', the weather is amazing, even the birds are bumpin'." He starts riding his bike and feels the fresh air and begins to feel much better. This song can be applied to many more situations than just the day after drinking. I believe it can apply to when you are feeling down or don't feel well overall–everything seems a little darker around you, and sometimes all you need to do is take a look around and realize all of the wonderful things you have to be greatful for. This song helps me to open my eyes to what's around me. It is very simple and easy going, which are two characteristics I admire in both people and situations I face in life. One memory associated with this song is just driving around on a Sunday afternoon with my buddy listening to this song, feeling carefree for at least moment. You should listen to this song because you will immediately feel relaxed and overcome with a sense of calmness in a time of panic or detachment.

Chance the Rapper News Release

Chance the Rapper to perform live at House of Blues, LA
Chance the Rapper will perform live as part of The Social Experiment Tour at the House of Blues in LA. He will be singing songs off his mixtape 10 Day and his album Acid Rap. This unique Chicago artist will take the stage on November 15, 2014.
Chancelor Bennett, aka Chance the Rapper, turned a 10-day suspension from high school into an extended recording session for his appropriately named mixtape, 10 Day. The mixtape immediately turned heads and helped Chance get his foot in the door. His first album, Acid Rap, exploded on the scene and displayed his passionate lyrics and retro beats.
Chance’s high-energy performances have been leaving his fans and hip-hop lovers in awe.  In a recent interview, Chance said, “For me, performing is the biggest part of being a rapper. There’s nothing like the feeling of screaming your story to people.” His next show is on November 15, 2014 at the House of Blues located at 8430 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069.
Tickets are now available at chanceraps.com.

News Articles

The first news article I came across is about Dancing with the Stars coming to Niagara Falls. The story is informing the audience about the show coming to Buffalo and therefore is advertising the event. Mark Ballas and Witney Carson are mentioned as the first two official dancers to join the production. They go on to say when and where the show will air which is Dec. 27 in the Seneca Events Center in Niagara Falls. The quality that this news article is missing to make it an appropriate advertisement is that there is no call to action.

The next article titled Putting the Spotlight on Polish Food. It was about a Polish festival called Zupapalooza, where a variety of Polish soups will be available for in-house sampling or take out. This news article doubled as an effective advertisement because the writer did a good job of covering the who, what, when, where & why's. "On Nov. 9, at Leonard Post (2450 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga), a Polish soup summit of sorts will take place." The writer covers the when and where, and goes on ticket pricing and the types of soup that will be available. Finally at the end of the article, they say, "For advance tickets, call Lawicki at 864-6110," which is the call to action.

My final article is titled Kidney Foundation Plans Tree Decorating Ceremony. This piece comes across more as an advertisement than a news article. There is not much filler info, and the author sticks to short & concise sentences hitting on the details of the event. "Kidney donors and donor families will be honored when the Northeast Kidney Foundation of Greater Buffalo holds a tree decorating ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 20 in the lobby of the Erie County Medical Center Dialysis Center, 462 Grider St." The author gets straight to the point at informing the audience of this ceremony and also invites people to join the event. The last paragraph is the call to action, which reads "All kidney patients, transplant patients, donors, donor families, medical professionals and friends are invited. For information, call 512-7918 or email barbara@healthykidneys.org."

Chance the Rapper

Chance the Rapper is one of a kind. What makes him different is his combination of unique song topics & lyrics along with inspiring beats. At only 21 years old, Chance's high energy will inevitably make you move your feet and bob your head. Chance is outgoing and has a good personality, which only add to his ability as a performer. He creates a connection with his audience that cannot be compared to any other show.

Chance's music is unique and powerful; he sings about personal stories and leaves it all on the line. The show he puts on is intimate and you will love learning about Chance as a person. His positive attitude and his dancing and singing will grab the attention of the audience and very rarely will he let go. Chance the Rapper is an excellent showman and his live performance will leave you in awe.

Mac Laptop

I use my MacBook Pro laptop everyday; sometimes up to eleven hours per day. Monday through Friday I work as a graphic designer at my dad's visual communications company, SB Marketing LLC. My responsibilities include logo design, web design, page layout, variable print design and more. I have become well-versed with the Adobe Suite applications like Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign & Acrobat. Most of the time, I have at least 6 applications open at any given time, and my Macbook Pro proves its durability by not crashing, lagging or slowing. If you are in the market for a lap top, I would definitely suggest the Macbook Pro. I have downloaded countless files, constantly send emails, surf the web and even play music in the background. My computer holds a charge just the same as it did when I first bought it, about 5 years ago. Though the price is a little higher than other laptops, Macs are extremely durable and will last you many more years than the average laptop.

Bad Advertising

One advertising campaign that I hate is the Fucillo Automotive commercials. The commercials are unprofessional and I can't stand how loud and obnoxious Billy Fucillo is while screaming "It's HUGE."  One competitor of Fucillo is West Herr Nissan. Their commercials are much more professional. They are concise with what they have to offer as an automotive group and do so in an organized manner. To improve the quality of Fucillo's commercials, I would make them more professional; less nonsense and more information that will be useful to the potential buyer.
